In the past decade, with the aim of achieving lower operating costs, better performance, higher energy efficiency, and rapid advances in nanotechnology, a large number of investigations have been carried out using nanofluids in different heat and mass transfer applications. Our investigation will be focused on the mass transfer of single drops in the presence of nanoparticle in the liquid−liquid extraction process in bubble column.
In this study mass transfer rate and effect of presence of different concentrations of nanoparticle on mass transfer performance will be investigated and at last volumetric mass transfer coefficient will be determined.
A bubble column will be used as the contactor. In general, bubble columns are used to achieve intimate contact between a continuous liquid and dispersed gas phase. In its most simple form, a bubble column reactor consists of a vertical cylindrical vessel filled with a liquid and a gas distributor at the bottom, gas is sparged through the distributor into the column in the form of bubbles and comes in contact with the liquid. Formation of drops in our experiment will be provided using a nozzle or needle .
The chemical system of toluene−acetic acid/acetone−water, with a high interfacial tension, will be used. Continuous phase is deionized water containing SiO2 nanoparticles. The rate of mass transfer will be investigated by measuring the drop solute concentration by means of gas chromatography or densitometry methods for a specified distance in the column.
By writing mass balance for droplet and after rearranging and integrating, volumetric mass transfer coefficient can be obtained.
